Why is Pushkin so important?
Pushkin played a crucial role in shaping modern literary Russian. His works combine poetic language with everyday speech, humour, drama and philosophical ideas. Among his best-known works are Eugene Onegin, The Captain’s Daughter, Dubrovsky, Ruslan and Ludmila, as well as his famous poems and fairy tales.

His African heritage
Pushkin had African ancestry through his mother’s family. His great-grandfather, Abram Petrovich Gannibal, was of African origin and became a military engineer and general in the Russian Empire. Pushkin was proud of his ancestor’s remarkable story and wrote the historical novel The Moor of Peter the Great about him.
